The Expositor's Bible Commentary Complete Set (OT & NT), 12 Volumes
Return to the Lay series reading list to browse similar recommended books.
If my friends could only buy one set of commentaries, this would be the set. In fact, few people rarely need more. Whether you just want to understand the text a little better, or are preparing for a Bible study or a sermon, this is a magnificent set. Written by well-established scholars, it is easily accessible. It really is that good.
Now a little word of warning: the set is being updated, and that means if you wait this set might become a little cheaper. But really, if you want to be able to study, buy it now.
The single updated volumes are coming out and can be purchased separately.
I own an electronic version that is accessible from within my computer program. But whether you use print or electronic, it is great having a resource that covers all the biblical text with enough depth that I rarely need to go elsewhere unless I am doing serious academic work. You can sometimes buy them as separate volumes as well, especially the new ones.
