This is a book about an unexpected event in Gene and Carol Kent's life that took their life perspective on earth into a downward spiral, but their spiritual lives into a deeper presence of God. Their son ended up in prison with a life sentence. It is the story of how they worked through their hurt and loss with Christ in the midst of their pain.

As Abraham in the Bible laid down his own son, Isaac, Carol Kent's book challenged me to lay my own Isaacs down as I have encountered unexpected loss through an event that was out of my control. She brought to my mind that God is more interested in the process of my struggle than the outcome of my desired goal. God's goal for my life is that I grow in my relationship with him, experience His presence in a deeper way, and most importantly is to glorify him in the process.

One of my favorite quotes: "Lord, please don't allow us to waste our sorrow. Turn this evil and hurtful event into something that will give You glory and further Your Kingdom work. Help us to fit in with Your purposes. We know You didn't plan what happened, but help us to turn what the Enemy intended for our destruction into a joyful celebration of Your power and greatness." Together Gene and I prayed, 'We are available to do what You want us to do.'"

I read this book in two days so be prepared to not be able to put it down. Your life with Christ will be changed but it doesn't mean it will be easy. "Heart work is hard work," but it is worth it.
